Promoting Maori Cultural Awareness and Competency in Employment, Education, & Local Government
Taurikura NZ is a social enterprise that promotes cultural stability in the workplace and community. We can help build cultural competency in your organisation, enriching and improving it while also helping you achieve your goals. We also build engaging and meaningful programmes that have Maori people and communities at their core. With our successful track record of projects, we can help you implement a meaningful and successful diversity and inclusion programme that benefits your organisation and indigenous communities. We also run programmes on behalf of third sector and public sector organisations.
At Taurikura NZ, we work with clients who have values that align with ours and who are invested in driving positive change and creating thriving local communities. Whether it is Maori cultural competency in health care, education, public sector organisations, or any other organisation, we have the passion, expertise, and experience to deliver.
At Taurikura NZ, we combat cultural destructiveness through inter cultural awareness and cultural pre competence in NZ, working in sectors like healthcare, social work, local government, and education.

Civic Education to Support Future Indigenous Leaders
We run education programmes in the community to highlight the importance of local government and increase community engagement. We also support candidates standing in local council elections.
Taurikura is a social enterprise operating in the cultural competency and awareness space. Our objective is to help create the conditions where indigenous communities and people can achieve their full potential.
To achieve this in the public sector, education, health and healthcare, and business sectors, you need a workforce and skill development strategy that focuses on cultural competencies in relation to indigenous NZ people and communities.
We work with organisations in a range of different ways, from providing leadership development consultancy services to companies in all sectors, to providing youth leadership development and mentoring programmes across NZ. The latter is particularly important, as an effective youth mentoring programme today will create the youth and business leaders and mentors that New Zealand needs for the future.
What is Cultural Competence?
Cultural competence occurs at an individual level, so individuals within an organisation determine its overall level of cultural competency. At its core, it is about being self-aware and understanding our own attitudes, and it involves having the skills and abilities to deal with situations properly.
Key aspects involve valuing inclusion and diversity, as well as being capable of cultural self-assessment. For example, in situations where a person feels uncomfortable when interacting with someone from a different culture, cultural competence is about understanding that discomfort comes from within because of internal biases and beliefs.
